Acupressure Eases Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients

Acupressure Eases Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients
Among patients with end-stage renal disease who were undergoing chronic hemodialysis, the application of 20 minutes of acupressure three times a week for four weeks resulted in a significant reduction in fatigue, as compared to both a placebo and control group, according to recent research. The study, “Effect of acupressure on fatigue in patients on hemodialysis,” involved 96 patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Criteria to participate in the study included a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease, undergoing hemodialysis for at least three months and a primary complaint of fatigue with a score of five or more on the Fatigue Severity Scale. Participants were randomly assigned to either the acupressure group, the placebo group or the control group, with 32 subjects in each group. Before and after the four-week intervention began, the subjects filled out the Piper Fatigue Scale, which assesses the behavioral, emotional, sensory and cognitive dimensions of mental fatigue. For the intervention, patients assigned to...

A Healthy Diet Equals Healthy Aging

A Healthy Diet Equals Healthy Aging
Candida albicans is a common fungus that is usually harmless, living in small quantities on your skin and mucous membranes. When the human immune system is disrupted—due to disease or antibiotic use, for example—Candida populations can skyrocket out of control, causing dangerous fungal infections. So why should healthy adults worry about this ubiquitous little fungus?Recent studies have shown that the meat-intensive, white-flour-packed diet many of us eat can turn our digestive systems into breeding grounds for Candida—and too much of it can cause chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, weight gain and other health issues. Author Sondra Forsyth explores the problem of Candida overgrowth in her new book, Candida Cleanse: The 21-Day Diet to Beat Yeast and Feel Your Best, and offers these suggestions for restoring your system to a healthy balance through the foods you eat:A Healthy Diet Equals Healthy AgingLet me tell you about some research showing the association between dietary...

Subdue Sciatica Pain with Massage

Subdue Sciatica Pain with Massage
Some lucky women breeze through pregnancy with hardly any physical discomfort. But for others, unexpected aches and pains become a constant part of the nine-month journey. One of the most common complaints massage therapists hear relates to sciatica pain. Fortunately, you can subdue sciatica pain with massage therapy. The sciatic nerve runs from the neck through the midsection of the back of the body and into the leg. As a woman’s pregnancy advances, this nerve bears the brunt of the growing fetus and expanding uterus. Additionally, swelling from water retention can increase pressure on this nerve, contributing to inflammation. Pregnant women who drive long distances or have jobs that require sitting for long periods of time may have a higher risk of developing sciatica. And, of course, the position of the fetus significantly affects sciatic-related pain.Sciatic pain typically affects only one side of the lower body and may extend from the lower...

Chiropractic Care and Acid Reflux Disease / GERD

Chiropractic Care and Acid Reflux Disease / GERD
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD / Acid Reflux Disease), is becoming more and more prevalent throughout the world, especially among middle-aged and the older segment of the population. However, even pediatric populations are developing GERD signs and symptoms at an alarming rate.Ignoring GERD symptoms or failing to eliminate the cause, can lead to ulcers and esophageal cancer. While diet, smoking, stress, caffeine intake, and certain drugs all contribute to GERD, recent studies suggest that lumbar kyphosis – or the abnormal curvature of the spine – combined with back muscle weakness, can have a “significant effect” on the presence of the disease.Furthermore, increased thoracic–mid back- curvature called hyper-kyphosis has also been found to cause and / or contribute to the signs and symptoms of GERD. There are at least two mechanisms whereby altered spinal and postural alignment can lead to GERD.Chiropractic Care and Acid Reflux DiseaseFirst is a direct mechanical effect. Lumbar kyphosis and...
