Chiropractic First Surgery Last

Low back pain is the second most cause of seeing a doctor. It also happens to be the second most common cause of disabilities in the US. Some of the causes of back pain injuries include lifting, pulling, or carrying heavy objects, twisting awkwardly, over stretching, sitting in a hunched position, slouching chairs among others. Those who sustain injuries while at work spend a lot of time looking for medication, making them lose many days, and consequently, they perform less. There are various methods that physicians employ to treat back pain from various medications to the most invasive surgery.

There are several types of back surgery that are performed today, including a discectomy, foraminotomy, disk replacement, spinal fusion and even laminectomy. At times, surgery may be seen as the recommended course of action to take when it comes to relieving lower back pain. However, as an experienced Chiropractor, I will tell you that surgery should be your last resort to consider for a number of reasons.
Surgery has a poor success rate with barely less than 50 percent. In fact, some people refer to this low rate as a failed back surgery syndrome. Even with the many types of back surgeries, you are not 100 percent guaranteed that any of them will work for you, and sometimes, the one you or your doctor chooses to perform may have to be repeated.
After surgery, you will need to take a lot of time to recuperate which could last for up to several months. Besides being inconvenienced, you may develop other complications such as nerve damage, infections, anesthesia, blood clots or worse, stroke. In the case of nerve damage, you risk having sexual dysfunction, paralysis or loss of bowel of bladder control, not mentioning severe pain and weakness.
Your first choice and least invasive application should be chiropractic care, which serves as a perfect alternative to surgery. Many people seeking back pain relief alternatives in Seattle choose chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic care uses a non-surgical approach to solve your problem and enable you to get on your feet within the minimum time possible.
Chiropractors professionals are equipped with proper training on how to treat back pain problems. They use various treatment methods including hands-on spinal manipulation to align the body’s musculoskeletal structure enabling the body to heal on its own without surgery or habit forming pain medication. Some incorporate exercise and nutritional counseling into the treatment plan more effective and comprehensive. Before any treatment is recommended a complete medical history, physical examination and use of x-rays if needed are used to determine if chiropractic care would be helpful.
Numerous studies show that the spinal adjustments used by chiropractors to treat acute low back pain are highly effective. Acute back pain is the most common compared to the chronic pain and usually lasts for less than six weeks. In most cases, chiropractors use manual adjustments to realigned restore normal function to the joints using various forms of controlled forces to restore the function of your back.
Studies show that people who sought treatment for work-related back injuries, those who saw a surgeon first were over 40 percent more likely to end up in surgery within three years. Interestingly, less than 2 percent of those who first consulted a chiropractor were likely to end up in surgery. More than 98 percent of the people who sought the assistance of a chiropractor were able to experience an elimination or reduction of their back pain without surgery and were, therefore, able to get back to work after a several weeks.
Compared to surgery, chiropractic care is inexpensive. Surgical costs combines with medications, imaging and rehabilitation costs average case approaches $100,000 with some upwards to $200,000. The average costs for treating the low back pain with a Chiropractor is less than $3,000, a small percent of the costs of medical intervention.

An interesting study discovered that the rate of surgery depended not on the condition alone but greatly on what type of doctor was seen first by the injured worker or patient. If the patient or injured worker was first seen by a surgeon, than over 42% would result in surgery. However, if they were first seen by a chiropractor, only 1.5% would have surgery. The rate of having an expensive surgery was reduced by over 95%, just by the choice of going to a chiropractor first.
